Ermita Nueva (5km from Alcalá la Real & 35km from Granada)

Ermita Nueva in Jaen is located to the south of the municipal, next to the Badajoz-Granada national road. On the slopes of Cerro del Camello, and bordering the province of Granada. In this hill there is a geomorphological phenomenon, which has given rise to a very particular rock formation. The product of a differential erosion process caused by meteorological agents.

The village name, Ermita Nueva, comes from a temple which was built back in 1781 to worship the Saint Isidro. You can actually go and visit the local museum in Alcalá la Real to see facts and objects from that time.

Alcalá la Real

Alcalá La Real is a delightful town located on the N432 between Granada (45km) and Cordoba (80km). The town has an impressive fortress, and was a strategic stronghold during medieval times and subsequently occupied by the Morris in 713AD. Therefore Alcalá was the scene of frequent battles between the Moors and the Christians. This tumultuous period lasted until 1341 when Alfonso X! gained control of the town.

The magnificent castle ‘LA MOTA’ dates back to 727 when the town was under Muslim rule. The castle was severely damaged in the 19th century when battles were fought with France, and it was after that abandoned. Today much of it has been restored and it continues to be renovated standing proud on top of the hill looking over the delightful town.

There are many churches, and a town hall, all important and impressive buildings, and there are many historic buildings in and around Alcalá la Real.

Granada

Granada – the land of a thousand castles.

The allure of the Alhambra, the serene Islamic architecture, and Arab-flavoured street life go hand in hand with monumental churches, old school tapas bars and counterculture art.

Granada is full of Moorish heritage dating back more than 700 years. The Alhambra, a compound with palaces, courtyards and gardens where the Emirs of Granada would escape the summer heat.

You can work your way along the streets of the old Moorish city, laid out exactly as it was in medieval times, or enter the cave dwellings of the historic neighbourhood famed for its flamenco shows. Whilst the soaring peaks of the sierra Nevada will draw in your gaze from the east.
